Callahan et al. (1985) identified a novel class of human endogenous retrovirus. In the study of a representative, HLM2, they found that the proviral genome is a mosaic of retroviral-related sequences: the env gene sequences are closely related to type A virus; LTR sequences are most homologous to type D virus and pol gene sequences are related to each of these as well as to mammalian type B and avian type C viral genomes.
HLM2 was assigned to chromosome 1 by studies in somatic cell hybrids (Callahan et al., 1985).
Hall et al. (1987) found evidence for loose linkage with Rh. HLM2 is probably distal to Rh because PGM (which is linked to Rh on its centromeric side) and HLM2 were not closely linked.
