TEXT

Mapping

Morrison et al. (1988, 1989) investigated a cluster of tRNA genes, including TRL2. In situ hybridization with biotin labeling permitted localization to 17pter-p12. By in situ hybridization, Morrison et al. (1989) showed that the corresponding gene is located on the short arm of chromosome 19 in the orangutan, providing further support for homology between chromosome 19 in the higher primates and chromosome 17 in man. In the gorilla the cluster was located on the long arm of chromosome 19. By means of a somatic cell hybrid mapping panel, Morrison et al. (1991) confirmed and refined the assignment to 17p13.100-p13.105. Morrison et al. (1991) reported that tRNA(arg) (TRR1; 610406) is in the same cluster and that a tRNA(gly) (TRG2; 610407) gene is within 4 kb of the tRNA(arg) gene of the cluster on genomic DNA. It was independently localized to the same chromosome position.

Gene Structure

Bourn et al. (1994) determined that the first 4 genes of the cluster, TRL2, TRK1 (189918), TRQ1 (189919), and TRR1 are separated from the TRG2 gene by a CpG island, and they are copied at least 2 and possibly 3 times within chromosome 17p13.1. All 5 genes are further copied in other arrangements within the same small chromosomal region; the TRL2 gene is copied a minimum of 10 times.
