Ashworth et al. (1989) determined the mouse and human location of a gene that codes for a protein containing potential DNA-binding zinc fingers. An analysis of the segregation of RFLPs in recombinant inbred strains and in an interspecific backcross demonstrated that Zfp-3 is located on mouse chromosome 11. (Another zinc finger protein gene, Zfp-4, is located on mouse chromosome 8.) By Southern analysis of DNA from mouse-human somatic cell hybrids, Ashworth et al. (1989) demonstrated that in humans the homologous protein, called ZFP3, is located on 17pter-p12 and thus is part of the conserved linkage group between this chromosome and the distal half of mouse chromosome 11. Zfp-3 and Trp53-1 are tightly linked on mouse chromosome 11; the human equivalent of Trp53-1 (TP53; 191170) maps to 17p13.
