NEURAL PRECURSOR CELL EXPRESSED, DEVELOPMENTALLY DOWNREGULATED 1; NEDD1

HGNC Approved Gene Symbol: NEDD1

Cytogenetic location: 12q23.1     Genomic coordinates (GRCh38): 12:96,907,257-96,953,780 (from NCBI)

TEXT

Description

The developmentally regulated mouse gene Nedd1 encodes a protein showing similarities with the beta subunit of heterotrimeric GTP-binding proteins and has growth suppressing activity when overexpressed in various cultured cell types (summary by Takai et al., 1995). Nedd was so named for 'neural precursor cell-expressed developmentally downregulated' (Kumar et al., 1992). Nedd genes are expressed strongly during the early development of the mouse central nervous system but at much reduced levels in adult tissues. The expression and biologic activity of NEDD1 suggests a potential role as a tumor suppressor gene.

Mapping

By fluorescence in situ hybridization, Takai et al. (1995) mapped the human NEDD1 gene to chromosome 12q22.
