Gene: [09p13/GGTB2] glycoprotein-4-beta-galactosyltransferase 2 (EC:2.4.1.38); lactose synthase (EC:2.4.1.22); N-acetyllactosamine synthase (EC:2.4.1.90);

COM

Another form of glycoprotein-4-beta-galactosyltransferase was previously suggested, which, by inference, was encoded by an independent locus in Chr 4 (GGTB1). However, it was demonstrated that this gene is most likely to determine one of activators of the enzyme (see GEM:04^/GTA). Thus, only one GGTB gene is currently known in the human genome (that in Chr 9p13)."

FUN

[1] EC:2.4.1.38; Systematic name: UDP-galactose:N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminyl- glycopeptide galactosyltransferase. Catalyzes reaction: UDP-galactose + N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminylglycopeptide = UDP + beta-D-galactosyl-1,4-N-acetyl-beta-D-glucosaminylglycopeptide.
[2] In complex with alpha-lactalbumin (GEM:12q13/LALBA), the glycoprotein-4-beta-galactosyltransferase forms a heterodimer protein possessing the lactose synthase (EC:2.4.1.22) enzymatic activity.
[3] The reaction EC:2.4.1.90 is catalysed by a component of EC:2.4.1.22, which is identical with EC:2.4.1.38, and by an enzyme from the golgi apparatus of animal tissues."
