The estrogen-related receptors ESRRA, ESRRB (GEM:14q243/ESRRB) and ESRRG (GEM:01q41/ESRRG) form a subgroup of the steroid/thyroid/retinoid receptor family. They are homologous to the estrogen receptor (see GEM:06q251/ESR1) and bind similar DNA targets; however, they are unable to activate gene transcription in response to estrogens. They are called orphan receptors because neither their ligand nor their physiologic role had been identified." |
