[1] Presently, three heat shock protein classes are distinguished: low-molecular polypeptides (MM no more than 30 kD; class B); middle-molecular polypeptides (MM about 70 kD; class A); and high-molecular polypeptides (MM up to 100 kD; class C). The alphabetic order of designation does not correspond to the order of MMs, because the designation follows the chronology of mapping and cloning of the respective genes: those for 90-kD (refined data, 89 kD) peptides were the last to be cloned. It is supposed that another class heat shock proteins, chaperonins (class D), will be mapped in the nearest future.
[2] Twelve loci related to heat shock peptide A genes have been identified. Ten of them are coding genes (GEM:06p2133/HSPA1A; GEM:06p2133/HSPA1B; GEM:14q22/HSPA2; GEM:21^/HSPA3; GEM:05q31/HSPA4; GEM:09q34/HSPA5; GEM:01q/HSPA6; GEM:01q/HSPA7; GEM:11q2/HSPA8; GEM:05q311/HSPA9); one is definitely an A pseudogene (GEM:0X^/HSPAP1); and one else, an A1-like gene (GEM:06p2133/HSPA1L), has been mapped close to the coding A1A and A1B gene.
[3] As for three B genes, it is not clear yet, which of them are expressed and which are pseudogenes. MIM Catalogue has no registered these markers (it just mentions them as a class of 27-kD HS peptides, while describing 89-kD peptides under MIM:140571). In addition to B-like gene 1 in Chr 3, three other HSPB-like genes are mapped to Chrs 9q, X, and 5q11.2 (GEM:03^/HSPBL1; GEM:09q/HSPBL2; GEM:0X^/HSPBL3; GEM:05q112/HSPBL4).
[4] For class 3 (MM 89 kD) HSPC peptides, cDNAs were identified. Four HSPCA-like sequences were mapped (GEM:01q2/HSPCAL1; GEM:04q35/HSPCAL2; GEM:11p14/HSPCAL3; GEM:14q323/HSPCAL4). The coding alpha sequence is not mapped yet (GEM:00.0/HSPCA); beta polypeptide is mapped to Chr 6 (GEM:06p12/HSPCB)."
