N. G. Danilenko Institute of Genetics and Cytology, National Academy of Belarus, Minsk, 220072 Belarus fax: (0172) 63-58-27; e-mail: soyanort@home.bv RNA editing (posttranscriptional alterations to messenger RNAs) is revealed in different genetic systems, pri-marily, in mitochondria and chloroplasts. In this review, we discuss the prevalence of the process, characteristic features in different taxonomic groups, specificity, biological implication, and possible evolutionary origin of this process.
