Northern J Jr, Tvedten HW: Reports of retrospective studies. Diagnosis of microthrombocytosis and immune-mediated thrombocytopenia in dogs with thrombocytopenia: 68 cases (1987- 1989). JAVMA 200:368 1992. Retrospective study that describes the unique finding of low mean platelet volume in dogs diagnosed as having immune-mediated thrombocytopenia and illustrates the platelet histogram changes in various diseases.
Tvedten HW: Advanced hematology analyzers: Interpretation of results. Vet Clin Path 22:72 1993a. A paper similar to this article-includes additional examples of diagnostic patterns.
Tvedten HW: Multispecies Hematology Atlas. Tarrytown, NY: Miles Inc., 1993b, p 44. Includes about 50 veterinary cases that illustrate hematologic changes well visualized with cytograms and histograms, describes more in-depth technical aspects of the H-l analyzer, and has a section on interpretation of H-l reports.
Tvedten HW: What is your diagnosis? Cat with Heinz body anemia after eating baby food. Vet Clin Path 25:14819%. Case report that illustrates the unique RBC cytogram and hemoglobin histogram patterns of Heinz bodies in apparently hyperchromic RBC; also shows how WBC cytograms demonstrate errors in the WBC count owing to Heinz bodies.
Tvedten H, Haines C: Canine automated differential leukocyte count: Study using a hematology analyzer system. Vet Clin Path 23:72 1994. Describes the accuracy of an automated differential WBC count in dogs and what errors are likely.
Tvedten H, Korcal H: Automated differential leukocyte count in horses, cattle and cats using the Technicon H-1E hematology system. Vet Clin Path 25:72 1996. Describes the accuracy of an automated differential WBC count in cats and what errors are likely.
Weiser MG, Kociba GJ: Sequential changes in erythrocyte volume distribution and microcytosis associated with iron deficiency in kittens. Vet Pathol 20:1,1983. The first paper to document the frequent presence of microcytosis and iron deficiency in kittens. Newer, more sensitive hematology analyzer techniques were required to detect the disease.
