Gene: [06q12/ME1] malic enzyme 1, soluble;

FUN

Systematic name: L-malate:NADP+ oxidoreductase (decarboxylizing oxaloacetate). Catalyzes the oxidative decarboxylation of malate: L-malate + NADP+ = pyruvate + carbon dioxide + NADPH. The enzyme provides the relation between glycolysis and the citric acid cycle."

FAG

A gene for the mitochondrial isoform of this enzyme is mapped on the short arm of this chromosome (GEM:06p2/ME2). Genes for NAD-malate dehydrogenases (GEM:02p23/MDH1 and GEM:07q/MDH2) are located in chromosomes 2 and 7. On the biochemical classification of malate dehydrogenases, see GEM:02p23/MDH1."
