Gene: [11q13/UCP3] uncoupling protein 3 (mitochondrial, proton carrier);
COM |
Boss-1998 assigned the UCP3 gene to Chr 11q13. |
FUN |
[1] The mitochondrial uncoupling protein plays an important role in
generating
heat; see details in GEM:04q31/UCP1.
[2] Boss-1997 examined UCP expression in cold-adapted rats and found that, unlike UCP1, the expression levels of UCP2 (GEM:11q13/UCP2) and UCP3 were not affected by cold. Nonetheless, the authors concluded that UCP3 may be involved in thermogenesis through the uncoupling of oxidative phosphorylation in skeletal muscle." |
MOP |
Boss et al. cloned a short isoform of UCP3 (UCP3S) having 275 amino acids, and a long isoform of UCP3 (UCP3L), having 312 amino acids. UCP3S contained 3 mitochondrial energy-transfer-protein domains and 5 putative transmembrane domains, while UCP3L contained an additional 37 amino acids at its C terminus that encoded a putative transmembrane domain and a putative purine nucleotide-binding domain (Boss-1997)." |
TIS |
UCP3 is expressed preferentially and abundantly in skeletal muscle and brown adipose tissue (Vidal-Puig-1997) and in heart (Boss-1997)." |
