Gene: [02q3/INHA] inhibin, alpha; activin, alpha;
FUN | Alpha inhibin gene encodes one of the chains of inhibins - gonadal glycoprotein hormones - that inhibit the secretion of the hypophyseal follicle stimulating hormone (FSH). Beta polypeptide of FSH - follitropin beta - is mapped to Chr 11 (GEM:11p13/FSHB). For more details, see FAM:INH/00.0." |

MOP | [1] The glycosilated alpha peptide has MM 18kD, whereas the
primarily processed peptide is 14.6kD (134 amino acid residues; the mature
mRNA is 1.5kb). The primary translation product, preproinhibin, consists of
366 amino acid residues, of which 18 N-terminal residues form a signal
peptide, and the following 214 residues form a propeptide (including the
C-terminal dipeptide Arg-Arg, at which the propeptide proteolysis occurs).
Thus the mature (nonglycosilated) alpha peptide contains 134 amino acid
residues. [2] A great variety of alpha inhibin-like peptides (alpha-ILP), 31, 52, and 92 amino acids in length, are found in the seminal fluid. They are possibly derivatives of the proinhibin processing. [3] On the beta peptide structure, see GEM:07p1/INHBA." |
