Gene: [06q27/APOLPA] apolipoprotein Lp(a) (pre-beta-1 system); atherosclerosis, liability to; lower plasma apo(a) concentration, association with;

FUN

Lp(a) glycoprotein, in conjunction with apolipoprotein B (GEM:02p2/APOB), forms the lipoprotein(a) serum system. The system is an important factor of atherogenesis and pathogenesis of coronary disease. Apo(a) is thought to have proteolytic activity resembling that of plasmin (EC:3.4.21.7)."

MOP

[1] Usually a lipoprotein(a) particle contains two apo(a) molecules which are covalently bound to the apoB100 molecule by the disulfide bridges.
[2] Recently an interindividual polymorphism of number of repeats within 'kringle IV' region of Lp(a) peptide have been found (Kondo-1990). This polymorphism might explain the presence of Lp(a) isoforms described in Uterman-1987,1988a,1988b."

FOG

Increased serum Lp(a) is inherited as quasi-dominant mendelian trait.

ASS

Increased serum Lp(a) is thought to be an important risk factors for coronary disease that is independent of other factors, such as nutrition, smoking and, hormonal status."

EVO

The amino acid sequence of this protein shows the high homology to that of plasminogen, which gene (GEM:06q2/PLG) is also located in Chr 6q and closely linked with the APOLPA."

BIB

The bibliography on the general problems of atherogenesis, coronary disease and the role of other apolipoprotein serum systems is available in FAM:APOLP/00.0."
