Gene: [11q14/ELA3] elastase 3, neutrophil (medullasin, bone marrow serine protease);
COM |
NE is mentioned under MIM:130120 in description of ELA1. |
TIS |
ELA3 is expressed primarily in promyelocytes of bone marrow, while the macrophage phagolysosomes serve only for secondary storage. Therefore the conventional name neutrophil elastase (NE) is not quite correct." |
FUN |
Elastase 3 is a metalloproteinase; its activity is not suppressed by alpha-1 protease inhibitor (see antitrypsin, GEM:14q321/PI1), in contrast to the elastase 1 activity." |
FAG |
There are at least three different enzymes named 'elastase', and much controversion exists in literature on this item. Elastase 1 (GEM:12p1/ELA1) is a serine protease synthesized by the pancreatic acinar cells. It hydrolyses many proteins, including elastin (an unsoluble connective tissue protein, GEM:07q1123/ELN). Gene ELA2 was identified (cDNA cloned and the amino acid sequence of the protein determined) and mapped to chr 19 (GEM:19p133/ELA2)." |
